The Top 5 Supplements for PCOS

Are you trying your best to ‘manage your PCOS’ but still struggling to get your symptoms under control?

If so, you’re not alone cyster! Keep reading because this post is for you.

PCOS can be an extremely frustrating and difficult diagnosis to receive. There’s a TON of conflicting information out there about what it is and the variety of different symptoms. No doubt, you’re looking for a way to help alleviate those.

So, how do you treat PCOS?

When it comes to modern PCOS treatments, typically it’s more of a bandaid approach. If you’re like most of us, you’re just thrown various pills like metformin or birth control for PCOS treatment. This DOES NOT cure your PCOS. Your doctor simply covers up one symptom to uncover another PCOS symptom or side effect. It’s a never-ending balancing act, and babe I know it’s exhausting. I hear you.

Now that’s got you searching for an easier, gentler way to treat your PCOS. Or, better yet, you could find options that nourish your body and get down to the root causes of your symptoms. There’s got to be more than birth control out there.

And I have good news boo. As a Registered Dietitian, PCOS expert, and fellow PCOS-er with TWO highly successful PCOS programs, I’m here to tell you that there are legitimate alternative approaches to your care.

Here are my top five supplements for PCOS that I recommend to my clients and fellow cysters.

Magnesium

Oh baby, miracle magnesium! When it comes to women’s hormones and periods - this stuff is GOOD.

Magnesium targets multiple symptoms of PCOS including mood swings, irritability, insulin resistance, and digestion issues. Plus, miracle magnesium improves sleep and good sleep is the base of the pyramid when we’re talking about hormone health. It’s proven that magnesium levels in the body have a clear impact on PCOS.

These kickass reasons are why you’ll find this rockstar supplement in my VITA-PCOS line. The form of magnesium included helps fight the symptoms above, and combined with other powerful strategies allow you to finally become the boss of your PCOS. Plus, did you know most Americans don’t get the magnesium we need in our daily diet? Luckily, you can change that with a high-quality supplement cyster.

When should you take magnesium?

I personally like to take 2 VITA-PCOS magnesiums 1-2 hours before bed. The soothing and relaxing effects of magnesium can relax your muscles and prepare your body for healing sleep. Grab a bottle of magnesium for your good sleep, anti-PMS, hormone balancing routine. (Can you tell I like magnesium?!)

Omega-3s

Do you mean fish? Yes and no. For my babes worried about the taste of fishy supplements, there are tons of options out there to help you fight the fish oil burps. (Yes, that’s a thing, and yes, they’re horrible).

Beyond the burps, there are tons of amazing benefits from Omega-3s. Taking this supplement can reduce inflammation - a must with PCOS - and reduce period pain. Yes, you heard me right.

On top of that, Omega-3s support healthy insulin levels, helping to balance insulin resistance in women with PCOS. Lastly, this knockout supplement can also encourage lower androgen levels in the body. Lower androgens can result in lessening hirsutism, a reduction in acne, and other high androgen symptoms commonly seen in PCOS.

Zinc

Zinc is right up there with Omega-3s and Magnesium. As you take Zinc over time, it can help to boost your mood. I can see more than just smiles on the horizon too cyster as Zinc works to balance testosterone, which in turn can reduce acne, support healthy periods, and reduce (and hopefully eradicate) facial hair. Goodbye unwanted hair!

This is one of the main reasons I keep Zinc in my Androgen Blocker. It’s a key nutrient that women need for optimal hormone function. As such, I make sure it’s in my daily routine because it can be difficult even with a great diet to get enough Zinc.

Grab my favorite Androgen Blocker supplement perfect for my PCOS cysters who need help supporting lower levels of hormones like Testosterone here.

N-Acetyl L Cysteine

Isn’t that a mouthful? Well, NAC for short, is also full of PCOS symptom fighting power. N-Acetyl L Cysteine has been shown to improve insulin resistance, as shown in a glucose challenge test. (Something you should def get checked with your doc boo, blood sugar is important!)

With improved insulin resistance, NAC makes room to support healthy androgens, in turn improving hair loss and hirsutism

Lastly, as an added bonus for my cysters trying to get pregnant with PCOS, a study published in the European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology found that women using NAC  had a nine times higher ovulation rate and five times higher pregnancy rate. Nine and five times boo!

Phosphatidylserine

Looking to reduce your stress responses? Um yes please, sign me up! Thanks to this powerhouse of an antioxidant, you can improve the quantity and quality of your sleep. Enjoy all the benefits of this knockout supplement and others that support the cortisol response with my Cortisol Calmer Supplement. I created this supplement with relaxation in mind, something we ALL deserve.

For my PCOS cysters, you know how critical keeping your stress levels balanced is, plus how vital good sleep and less stress can be to reducing insulin resistance.

I find that the Cortisol Calmer is best taken 1-3 hours before bed - reduce your stress boo, and get some of that good GOOD sleep.

You can find the soothing Cortisol Calmer here.

What is the best multivitamin for PCOS?

Do I need a multivitamin for PCOS?

Let me get real with you cyster, no one eats perfectly 100% of the time, myself included. Sometimes we eat out, get stressed, go out, miss meals, or make not-so-healthy choices to eat - sh*t happens, life happens!

And, well, eating can be a lot of fun!

But, that’s why it’s so important to incorporate a daily multivitamin into your supplement regimen. This routine booster can fill in your nutritional gaps and prevent nutritional deficiencies. The booster vitamin keeps that metabolism healthy and ready to fight - and of course, helps support your fight against PCOS.

My personal fav is a great choice - packed full of essential nutrients AND PCOS friendly. You can find my PCOS-friendly VITA-PCOS Multivitamin here. I like to take mine with breakfast.
